The new Dynasty Handbag performance video, I Hate This Place, commissioned by The Broad, was created in response to Broad collection artist Mike Kelley’s Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstructions #10, 21, 24 (Gym Interior), 2004-2005. Her play-acting of childhood trauma, references to American history and pop culture, and the exploration of repressed memory, all parallel ideas and themes in Kelley’s work. Dynasty Handbag’s unique takes on these tropes are on display in a mini dramedy of youthful diary confessions with topics including frustration with family and school, repercussions of the Vietnam War, unrequited crushes, and the fantasy escape from reality which music can provide.

Create your own artwork inspired by Broad collection artist Takashi Murakami! In his massive 82-foot long painting titled, In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow, Murakami intended the artwork to be experienced like reading a page in a book; the story begins on the left side and continues as you walk along the canvas to the right. Today you will make an accordion book inspired by Murakami’s paintings. After you’re done creating your artwork, share photos w...ith us on social media by tagging @TheBroadMuseum and using #TheBroadFromHome. ___ Special thanks to Leading Partner East West Bank and supporting partner Land Rover. #LandRoverUSA See more

In Infinite Expansion (1983), Mike Kelley explores the concept of the sublime, an awe-inspiring emotion created by an encounter with greatness of incalculable scale, whether offered by human achievements or the natural landscape. To mark the start of Filipino/a/x American History Month, we’re looking at the work of Filipino-American artist Paul Pfeiffer, whose photographic series Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse digitally manipulates sports media images. After Pfeiffer’s manipulation, what is left is a single player caught in action surrounded by onlookers filling the stadium. All of his competitors have been removed along with advertising logos, scoreboards, and other distractions.... Stripped of their competitors, Pfeiffer’s athletes are shown in contorted positions, their agility reinterpreted as ecstasy or pain. The series title, referencing a passage from the Book or Revelation and a woodcut by artist Albrecht Dürer, signals the long history of representations of the body, critically updating that history to the present. ___ Paul Pfeiffer, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse #17, 2004. With the closure of school buildings, some students now lack basic art supplies, such as pencils and scissors, that they normally would have received in their classrooms. We’re creating free The Broad To Go art kits so that kids can get much-needed art supplies, be creative, and experience #TheBroadFromHome. This week, in partnership with Touch Art Supply, 1,400 students are each receiving a Pop art-themed The Broad To Go art kit through our non-profit #ArtsEd partners, I...nner-City Arts, 826LA & the Time Travel Mart, Greetings from South L.A, and Arts in Action Community Charter Schools. Each art kit contains art supplies, a journal, free museum passes for when we reopen, and art cards in English and Spanish that offer art activities and questions to develop each student’s critical thinking skills. We’re already busy making another 1,400 art kits on mixed media and can’t wait to help more kids make art. ___ Special thanks to Leading Partner East West Bank. Photos by Touch Art Supply
The spectacle of consumerism in Andreas Gursky’s iconic 99 Cent (1999) becomes increasingly hyperreal as we see the pandemic put consumerism under a critical light. By portraying a heightened construction of a dollar store through digital manipulation, Gursky’s photograph acts as a symbol of contemporary life. ___ Andreas Gursky, 99 Cent, 1999.
