TONIGHT 8pm::LAST LISTENING EVENT:: Birgit Ulher (Trumpet, Electronics) + Gino Robair (Electronics). Working with circuit bending and what he refers to as voltage made audible, Robair is a percussionist in the expanded field. Ulher, a trumpet player, favors the instruments inner workings over its traditional outward timbres. this gig is a long awaited reunion of friends who are sure to pick up right where their ever evolving, always exciting musical dialogue was last left.

Join us this Sunday at 7pm for the second concert in th Deep Listening Festival. This week will feature Cellist Fred Lonberg-Holmes and field recordist Gustavo Matamoros. For this live concert, Lonberg-Holm will perform over a spatialized remix manned by Matamoros. The evening will kick off with a version of Matamoros’ 2013 recording Distant Bats. In 2016, cellist and improviser extraordinaire Fred Lonberg-Holm was invited to the Subtropics Artist Residency at Audiothequ...e, a Miami based initiative. He then set out into the Everglades of Northern Florida where he took as collaborators the very vocal and varied species of frogs. Impeccably documented by the experienced soundscape artist and field recordist Gustavo Matamoros, the result was the 2018 release Bow Hard At the Frog. Matamoros’ microphones literally soaked up the swamp, with its teeming insect life and assorted gurgles. @ LAXART See more

This Sunday, please join us at 7:00pm for the first installment of the Deep Listening Festival featuring Geneva Skeen (electronics) + Anne Guthrie (French Horn and electronics). Comprised of four evenings, the Deep Listening Festival will focus on a range of experimental practices (electronic, electro-acoustic, documentary, improvisation) utilizing pre-recorded material, notably field recordings (recordings documenting the sounds of a given environment). For Skeen and Guth...rie, the field recording is simultaneously binding agent and base layer. Skeen's 2019 release, Dream State takes its title from a 2016 composition she reworked into a brooding, ambient affair. Drawn from the Oakland Port, its source material is set within a soundscape aptly evoking a dense fog. Guthrie’s Brass Orchids (2018) is a palimpsest of lingering sounds in which space and distance play no small part. Abstract electronic tones and textures only serve to throw its lyrical pre-recorded material into high relief as it takes on the character of memory and nostalgia. @ LAXART See more

This week, LAXART is also celebrating a grant we received from the Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award for $150k! This award will support the exhibition MONUMENTS, which will be curated by LAXART director Hamza Walker + artist @kara_walker_official ! The exhibition is planned for September 2021 + will feature recently decommissioned public works from across the US. While their appearance as a form of public commemoration represents the persistence of racist + tragically outmoded ideologies, these works will raise questions around free speech, censorship, + collective memory. LAXART will host a robust series of conversations, lectures, + programming questioning the appearance of such works. #LAXART #monuments #karawalker

We’d like to congratulate our deputy director + curator, Catherine Taft, for receiving a $30k award from @warholfoundation This award will provide critical research support in preparation for a 2021 exhibition Taft is curating, Life on Earth: Ecofeminist Art Since 1979. Having evolved from the environmental, feminist, and anti-nuclear movements of the 1980s, politically active artists took Ecofeminism as critical inquiry regarding the intersection between gender oppression + the exploitation of natural resources. Despite this, the movement has been conspicuously absent from historical surveys of the period. In advance of the exhibition, Taft will organize a related symposium at LAXARTstay tuned!! Again, congratulations to Taft + our sincerest gratitude to The Andy Warhol Foundation!
