The annual question is upon us. Which pie to have for Thanksgiving - pecan or pumpkin? According to food historians, pumpkin pie is older than pecan by about 100 years. It also has less calories. Pumpkin pie is smooth and delicate while pecan pie is crunchy, chewy and gooey. As with most outcomes of this debate, we made both, so you don't have to choose. Our September flavor of the month is Raspberry Chocolate. Raspberries are bramble fruits that like to jam. Sure, you can wear a raspberry beret, but it’s soooo much better to eat shortbread cookies joined with raspberry preserves and smothered in dark Guittard chocolate. Of course yet again, raspberries aren’t technically berries, they’re an aggregate of drupelets, but I think we can all agree berry sounds cheerier. Potato Chip Truffles for Papa! Cono de Arita is an unerupted volcano that sits on a bed of salt in the immensity of the Argentine puna. At 656 feet, it dominates the Salar de Arizaro salt flats, the 6th largest in the World. Its almost perfect cone shape against the flat backdrop gives the illusion it is floating. Archeological evidence indicates that the natural formation was probably used for ceremonies prior to the arrival of Incas. Of course, there have also been UFO sig...htings in the area. It is the beginning of June - a time when we normally celebrate LGBTQ Pride with rainbow alfajores - delicious and gay! Given all that is happening in the world, we also remember that this pride was born in protest. The Stonewall Riots were born from persistent police harassment of and brutality towards the queer community. As members and allies of the rainbow, it is our duty to stand with intersectional communities of color now and always. Black Lives Matter. This country is being called to justice. Cornell West says, "Justice is what love looks like in public." May we all heed this call.
