Do you have issues achieving a full squat? It may be limited by a lack of ankle flexibility. Here we are performing a distraction <-> technique to the ankle (Talocrural joint) to create more space. We use this technique to improve ankle dorsiflexion(toes to the nose) mobility to further improve walking, squatting, running, and everyday activities. #4 from our series on the hip machine @vistaphysicaltherapyandrehab ! Throwing you guys a curve ball as this exercise is for the knee and quadriceps, in particularly the VMO portion. The VMO is specifically important for terminal knee extension aka the last 10-20 degrees of straightening the knee. This ensures the patella in its optimal position and tracking in the femoral groove with knee flexion and extension range of motion. Misfiring of the VMO can lead to ACL, chondromalacia and tendinitis in the knee. #3 from our hip machine series! This exercise movement is called hip extension which utilizes the gluts, primarily gluteus Maximus, the largest of the buttock muscles. It is an important postural muscle for maintaining optimal position in standing and sitting offloading force through your sits bones. The Glut Max is also a powerful muscle for explosive movements such as large step ups and running. The hip flexors are important for hiking, negotiating stairs, and running. This exercise/motion is called hip abduction in which the leg moves straight out to the side is performed by the gluteal (buttock) muscles, primarily the gluteus medius. The gluteus medius is an important hip stabilizer that maintains the pelvis in a level, symmetrical position when walking or running. The muscle is instrumental in correct knee and ankle alignment down the kinetic chain. Here's a foam roller sequence we use for self myofascial release (self massage) in the interscapular area (between the shoulder blades). Follow the sequence of arm movements laying vertically along your foam roller and try to feel your muscles moving on the foam roller and spend more time applying pressure on any sore or tender areas. This video features a hard density foam roller that we utilize to improve thoracic extension (backwards bending). The foam roller acts as a fulcrum to leverage force on the lower vertebrae as you move the top vertebrae further into extension allowing you to self mobilize the facet joints in your mid back.
