Meet Arneta Finney, one of many recipients of the Dean Linda Sarna Fellowship in Nursing for PhD students. Read more about her experience below, or to learn more about how to support students and alumni like Arneta, visit https://spark.ucla.edu/project/25744 This fellowship provided financial assistance for me to continue my research on exploring the nutritional status with individuals with a spinal cord injury with and without pressure ulcers. A subject that is near and de...ar to my heart. The fellowship allowed me more time and energy to enhance my research by having the time to submit for grants, present at research conferences, and volunteer in underprivileged communities rather than trying to work part-time. Receiving this fellowship not only allowed me to graduate from the prestigious UCLA in 2018 with my PhD, but assisted me with continuing my commitment to removing barriers for underprivileged populations. This fellowship has opened a door and the prospect of a brighter future and has played a key role in shaping me into a successful researcher and educator. I cannot express my gratitude enough, and I want you to know that your generous support helped me achieve my dreams. Visit https://spark.ucla.edu/project/25744 to learn more!

Dean Sarna’s career at UCLA spans 50+ years as a nursing student, faculty member, chair and member of the Academic Senate, and ultimately dean of the School of Nursing. She led the efforts to implement UCLA's tobacco-free policy, and at UCLA and beyond Sarna is recognized for her international scholarship promoting the role of nursing in tobacco control and for her research on the symptoms and quality of life of people with lung cancer. Dean Sarna’s career truly demonstrates ...that PhD nurses are at the center of patient care, healthcare research, advocacy, education, and leadership. Since its founding in 1949, the UCLA School of Nursing has revolutionized nursing education, improved the quality of care, and influenced healthcare policy. The PhD program in the School of Nursing develops innovative scientists prepared to be leaders in nurse-led research, academia, practice and health systems improvement. The Dean Linda Sarna Doctoral Fellowship in Nursing was established in 2015 by a group of alumni to honor Dean Sarna’s efforts and advocacy for the PhD doctoral degree designation in nursing. As she prepares to retire on June 30, 2021, please join us in celebrating Dean Sarna’s dedicated service to the UCLA School of Nursing and the nursing profession by making a gift in her honor which will help us permanently endow this fellowship in her name in order to provide at least one PhD in nursing student with a full fellowship annually for years to come.
