STONEY FIRE - HWY 32 OPEN NOW, EVACUATIONS STILL IN EFFECT Chico firefighters are responding to a vegetation fire in the Canyon Oaks area, up Highway 32. Some evacuations are in place. Multiple air and ground resources are being deployed. Update 11:20 a.m. - According to the California Highway Patrol, Highway 32 is now open for traffic again due to the Stoney Fire. Please be aware that many firefighters are using Highway 32, so please avoid the area if possible while the fi...refight is active. --- Update 10:45 a.m. - According to CAL FIRE Public Information Officer John Gaddie, the Stoney Fire started as a Chico Fire incident, but was close to a mutual aid jurisdiction and a mutual aid "threat zone," so CAL FIRE moved in quickly. Air attack started early start Friday morning. They usually head to the air by 10:45 a.m., but Friday morning they got a three hour head start. CAL FIRE's Gaddie said that cooperation between Chico and Butte County Fire was imperative to get a jump on this fire quickly, especially because the fire is so close to homes." CAL FIRE spokesperson Rick Carhart says 50 homes are impacted right now by the fire. Action News Now reporter Laura Eng went to the Red Cross Shelter in Chico, but no evacuees had shown up, as of 10:45 a.m. Volunteers were making preparations for evacuees, however. The fire is not currently threatening the 50-kv high power transmission lines that cut through the canyon where the fire is located, but 228 customers are without power in Forest Ranch and in east Chico. The power was turned off by PG&E because the fire is burning in close proximity to utility poles. PG&E spokesperson Paul Moreno says they will restore power to as many customers as they can, as quickly as possible.
