Grey halos are associated with metal ceramic crowns and/or thin gingival biotypes on darkened tooth structure. . This patient presented with an asymptomatic crown that recently darkened. Curious, considering that this was an all-ceramic crown completed a few years ago...... . Diagnosis? Formation of a periapical lesion that necessitated a re-treat. No recurrent various. Curious situation, but it can happen! Through-the-crown method with a neighboring #endodontist was in order! . It’s easy to say let’s cut that crown off and make a new one with a more opaque core. How hard will it be to match that adjacent natural tooth? Can and will lightning strike the same spot twice? . But wait! It’s even easier to say Let’s just pull and implant, but let’s take a step back and think of some reasons about why not! (I have a few!) . In the end, we achieved this rather aesthetic outcome and defeated the dreaded grey halo simply with closely-monitored internal bleaching and selective core buildup after the retreat proved successful. Tooth saved. Crown saved. Patient’s happy. I’m happy. .
