Plenty of Thyme for Honey Thyme is a great herb for stimulating the thymus, a major gland of the immune system. It is also a great pick-me-up when you have low... energy. Its antispasmodic properties are useful for lung problems and for convulsive coughs. Excellent remedy for sore throats. Use this delicious thyme honey by itself, or add it to teas for added medicinal benefits. Fill a wide mouth glass jar half full of fresh Thyme leaves and flowers. Using raw unpasteurized honey, warm the honey gentle, so that it extracts the properties of the Thyme better. Do not over heat or boil; heat over 110 degrees will kill the enzymes and destroy the medicinal properties of honey. Cover with the warmed honey and place in a warm sunny spot in the kitchen or near a heat source for approximately two weeks. If you have a slow cooker or crock pot that can be lowered to 110 degrees, you can use this as well. It will take only a few hours of constant warm heat to make a strong medicinal honey. When the honey tastes and smells strongly of Thyme, it’s finished. You can leave the tiny Thyme leaves in the honey, which is what we do or strain them out. Once honey is strained, rebottle and store in a cool pantry or in the refrigerator. Use by the teaspoonful. For added benefits, make a nice pot of Thyme tea sweetened with thyme honey. You should ALWAYS dilute your essential oils when applying them topically. As well as being the safe thing to do, there are so many benefits in the carrier oils... themselves! Benefits include: added vitamins and minerals, antioxidant properties, restoration of barrier function, soften and nourish skin, lower risk of irritation. There are dozens of vegetable oils to play with, each with different benefits. We recommend using more than one to create a beneficial mix of therapeutic properties.
In response to a student question about using essential oils to affect the immune system, Dr. Petra Ratajc says: "There has been a lot of speculation regarding ...immunostimulation with essential oils. To be honest, I haven’t seen convincing evidence yet. People often over-interpret in vitro studies or mix anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities with immune-boosting and strong immune system, which causes confusion. Specific immune system ‘boosting’ is very rare in the plant kingdom, and this has evolutionary reasons as plants are supposed to be food, not something we’re fighting and sharpening our immune systems against. Even the well-known traditional immunostimulatory herbs such as Echinacea (purple coneflower) had mixed results in systematic reviews of clinical trials. However, there is good evidence of immunostimulation for beta-glucans - polysaccharides from the cell walls of certain fungus species. Glucans structurally resemble components of pathogens, which is why they activate the immune cells (including those in the gut lymphatic system) without causing harm. Apart from that, and more importantly, the best thing you can do for the immune system is to exercise regularly, eat healthy food (also make sure you have enough vitamin C and D3, and zinc), have a good quality sleep, avoid stress and unhealthy habits, and stay well hydrated. All of these are proven to help optimize the immune system."
My new Smell 101 video is up. I’m keeping these exercises short, but I’ll build up the series to include more. To make it easier, I’ve uploaded everything on YouTube, so you can watch the videos there. Doing these exercises first thing in the morning is best of all.
