Raphio Chocolate

Exactly a month from now, Raphio Chocolate is organizing an event where anyone can make a difference in a country where hunger is so pervasive and force children to work in a neighboring country to feed themselves and their families. Please read on and help if you can. Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa just north of Ivory Coast (the biggest producer of cocoa beans in the world), suffers from cyclical droughts and flooding year in and year out. With the demand of chocolat...e goes up every year, Ivory Coast is needing more and more labors, hence children trafficking flourishes. That’s what is happening on the ground. How about the corporations who are purchasing the beans? Can they require the farmers to certify that no underage children working in their farms? Yes they can. Are they requiring that transparency? No, they are not. How about the government? I don’t want to get political but let’s just say that the world government from different countries are not doing enough to stop this practice of child trafficking. Starting in 2001, Harkin-Engel Protocol was set to achieve certain standards to eradicate child labor by 2005. That didn’t happen. Then, they set another goal at 2010 to get significant reduction by 2020. That got missed too. The 20-year lesson is we cannot wait anymore. This is a quick summary of my understanding of what is happening in Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, based on my research, correspondence with CRS and RHA, Washington Post article about child labor in West Africa and report on child slavery lawsuit faced by Hershey, Nestle, Cargill, Barry Callebaut, Olam and Mondelez. Back to US This is what we can do now rather than waiting for nothing to happen. During our event, we will package dried meals, composed of rice, dehydrated soy, vegetables and vitamin and mineral packet. Today we are bringing an awareness to the World Day Against Child Labor in many fields around the world, including cocoa. The big companies that are sourcing cocoa beans from countries with deep rooted problems of child labor need to stop. While I am one of many chocolate makers who are sourcing cocoa beans responsibly, all of us combined may still not be enough to influence the outcome in the near future.
