Join us this Friday, January 15, at 4pm for an online maker talk with Mike Johnson of Sam Maloof Woodworker, Inc. Born and raised in Southern California, Mike Johnson was passionate about woodworking from an early age. He followed Sam Maloof's work and career, collecting clippings of newspaper and magazine articles chronicling the woodworker's growing reputation and achievements. After graduating from California State University Long Beach with a degree in Industrial Arts and marrying Joanne (both in 1980), a chance encounter with Sam led to a decades long career devoted to learning the Maloof craft and, following Sam's passing in 2009, carrying on the business with Sam's blessing. #malooffoundation #sammaloof #maloof #woodworking #woodworkers #furnituredesign #historichouse #workshopwednesday #workshop #museumfromhome
There's a new episode of Deep House on our YouTube channel! In this episode, Larry and Lauren take a look at Sam Maloof's most iconic form: the rocker. Larry gives unique insights into the evolution of its form, from what was basically a Maloof chair with rockers attached to the bottom to the incredibly sumptuous and sculptural masterpiece that elevated furniture-making to new heights and cemented Sam's status as one of the greatest woodworkers of all time.
What kind of wood grain is this? Wait, this isn't wood! These are some close up photos of a recent visitor to The Maloof. Can you guess who came to play while our regular visitors have been away? Here are 3 hints: 1. This guest is named after some small but mighty trucks. 2. He’s the ambassador for one of our local special districts, which focuses on open space preservation, wildland rehabilitation, and education & outreach.... 3. This special district covers a big portion of the Inland Empire! #gardens #nature #wildlife #southerncalifornia #sanbernardino #inlandempire
