In the Garden, no. 189 of 200 iterations by artist Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941, Long Beach) of an isolated hideaway in France, painted between 1979 and 1983. To view the series as a whole is to turn the page and remark at a never-before variation on a theme. Working with one motifin this case a quiet garden with a reflecting pool and nude statue, she breaks away from form and focuses on exploring a feeling in her compositions. It's the shortest day of the year, and Bartlett's... night sky in the garden is a reminder to look up at the #GreatConjunction #WinterSolstice tonight. The Eames Fiberglass chair debuted in 1950 as the first chair with a seat and back formed from a singular plastic shell. Charles and Ray Eames sought to make the best, for the most, with the least. A marriage of form and function, the fiberglass shell is as practical as it is comfortable, as lightweight as it is durable. 70 years later, the Eames’ designs continue to inspire form, and are as iconic as they were on debut. At home with CA Designed 1955, LBMA’s 70th Anniversary show.

Zella Eckels Marggraf (1910-2008), born in a small farming community outside Columbus, Ohio completed her BS in Teacher Training from the Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Institute of Art in 1944. After the War, Marggraf moved to Los Angeles where her enamels, textiles, glassworks, and ceramics exhibited alongside the likes of #PeterVoulkos, #LorserFeitelson and #RupertDeese. Her mastery of the enamelling medium, a process whereby enamels are applied to copper using a variety of techniques from dusting, stencilling, painting, and silkscreen then fired in a hot kilnare apparent in these plated works gifted to LBMA by the artist. This vintage piece is on auction in Old Bags & Baubles, with proceeds supporting LBMA exhibitions and art eduction programs. Visit LBMA.org/fundraising-events/obb2020 to register and bid.
