Wangechi Mutu's sculptures inhabit an alternate universe informed by Afrofuturism, post-humanism, and feminism. Have we caught your attention? Learn about 'WANGECHI MUTU: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening?' from the artist herself tonight at 5pm PT on YouTube. The exhibition opens on Friday, May 7th.
In light of the recent mandate from the City and County of San Francisco, the Legion of Honor museum will close temporarily. The museum will remain open for the rest of today and the closure will go into effect tomorrow, 11/29. If your ticket reservation is affected, an email outlining options will be sent to you directly in the coming days. If you’d like to donate the ticket price to the museum in place of a refund, or have any questions regarding your reservation, please contact [email protected] (for non-members) or [email protected] (for members). The health and safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors is our highest priority, and we look forward to welcoming you back to our galleries at a future date. Stay tuned on our social media pages, website, and other channels for new content and reopening updates.
A painter of biblical proportions Peter Paul Rubens not only mastered large-scale paintings but also had a special expertise in bringing tales from the Bible to life. Fun fact: religious paintings were not always intended to be devotional. The subject is also attractive because of its interesting narratives and emotional complexity. Have you ever wondered why your favorite painting went "missing" from our walls? We have an active artwork-lending program through which we loan works from our collection to other museums, both national and international. While we love sharing, they always return home to the Legion of Honor in due time. Read on to see where our paintings have been traveling:

This one is for the parents. It's not easy keeping it together while keeping their families safe, healthy, and happy. You are seen. You are heard. You are appreciated! 'Madonna and Child' | Tintoretto | ca. 15701572
What's going on in the galleries while we're closed? Although we keep an eye on light levels full time (whether we're open or closed), conservators decided that covering furniture early on in the shutdown would have the double benefit of giving any potentially light-sensitive pieces a break from any light and prevent dust from accumulating, saving staff time during routine gallery maintenance. Please note we are still working with state and local officials to determine our re-opening date, but will make sure to let you all know as soon as possible.
Our beloved Joan of Arc statue underwent a major conservation treatment last year. Jane Williams, Director of Conservation, takes us through the intensive process on our blog.
Two months ago, we pledged to provide an update on our commitment to dismantling the racist systems within our institution. We realize that a commitment to radical change requires sustained growth on multiple levels, individual and institutional. Today, we share an update on our progress thus far, and give you the opportunity to join us on this journey. Check back to our "Institutional Commitments" blog category where different voices from the Museums will share updates on our journey. We're in it for the long haul.
Today marks 100 years since the 19th Amendment was passed, granting women their constitutional right to vote. This year we're supporting our local citizens' voting rights by turning our beloved Legion of Honor halls into a polling place on November 3rd. Stay tuned for voter registration reminders and other resources on our channels in the coming weeks!
Meet three emerging conservators from our Conservation department! Emily Rezes (Graduate Fellow in Objects Conservation), Kathryn Harada (Getty Conserving Canvas Fellow in Paintings Conservation), and Laura Garcia Vedrenne (Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Textiles Conservation) all began at the de Young and Legion of Honor museums in Fall 2019 and are in various stages of their conservation careers. Each will share some insight into their academic and on-the-job training. You will also get to see a little bit of the projects they were working on before the museum's temporary closure. Leave a question or comment for Emily, Kathryn, and Laura below for our live Q&A.
