Earth Week: Action Item 1: consider your trash, recycling, and compost. To help this Earth Week let's rethink what we buy, such as buying items with minimal, easily reusable/recyclable packaging, or items that come locally with no packaging! Some waste is impossible to avoid, but trying is better than not! Additionally, do you compost? YOU SHOULD! From a tiny at home compost to large city facilities we can all save our scraps and give back nutrients to the Earth. Comment your... composting tips below! . #Repost @brightly.eco . . . #LagunaOceanFoundation #EarthWeek #Compost #Reduce #Reuse #Recycle #GiveBack See more

So, this one hits hard for us. People thinking it's ok to litter because it's "biodegradable" is still LITTER. People should never leave their trash of any kind behind. Pack it in, pack it out, leave no trace, goes for our beaches too! Learn why bioplastics are such a problem... . #Repost @plasticsoupfoundation With an approximated 4.9 billion tonnes (4.9 trillion kilograms) of plastic waste sitting in landfills or in natural environments such as the ocean, it is understandab...le the search for alternative materials that, in theory, do not harm the environment. However, bogus solutions such as biodegradable plastics divert the attention from what is most important in the fight against plastic pollution: an absolute reduction of plastic production! It is important to know that these biodegradable plastics will likely end up sitting in the landfill for years if not disposed of correctly into facilities that put these plastics under the right conditions for quick degradation. Besides, there is a lot of confusion surrounding bioplastics because the term is used to convey different things. Because the different types of bioplastic cannot be easily distinguished from oil-based plastic, they often end up being mixed when collected for recycling, either in the plastic container or in the container for organic waste. This corrupts either the recycling process for plastic or the composting process for organic material. . . . #LagunaOceanFoundation #Bioplastics #GreenWashing #Plastic #NoPlastic #PlasticFree #PlasticPollutes #Litter #NoLittering #StopWishcycling

Happy International Plant Appreciation Day from our favorite coastal sea plant - our surf grass! Unlike seaweed, and algae, our surf grass is actually a salt water loving (needing) plant that flowers just like other land plants! They also provide a very important nursery habitat for coastal animals, especially young lobster and fish. We love this photo for the resilience and strength it shows! . #Repost @hiimjoe88 One last 6 Below image, having fun playing with slow shutter ...shots in the surf grass beds at Monastery beach. Are you celebrating Earth Month? We all need some change after the year we have had, and so we would like to challenge you to make a change for the Earth. First step, and a relatively easy step, is to stop buying plastic, finish what you have, and then find another amazing product that is more environmentally friendly. . Do you know over 1 billion toothpaste tubes are thrown into our landfill ever year? Many toothpaste tubes are not recyclable, or too many people don't take t...he time to clean their recyclables that they "wishcycle" them, but they ultimately end up in the landfill. We recommend trying tooth tabs (chewable toothpaste - great for traveling)! There are now many on the market! . #Repost @zeroxplastic How do you start the zero waste process? By slowly working through all the supplies you have before buying anything new. When you're ready to make purchases, research the company, are they doing their part for the environment? Where is their product made? If it was produced or manufactured far away, can you find it local? If not, isn't the company at least fair trade and grown sustainably? Lastly, what is it packaged in? Are there any plastic components? The idea is to avoid contributing ANY materials to landfill, while using recycling as a last resort. Whenever possible, use your OWN bags or containers as packaging, or find packaging that is compostable, like paper or cardboard. I would love to know what you say in the comments . Gooseneck Barnacles often spark imaginative nicknames from visitors. We have heard names such as "Turtle Flippers," "Dinosaur Teeth," and a variety of alien names. They may not look like our other barnacles, but they still are important for our tidepools as they provide micro habitats and change water flow which can be important for our tiniest organisms.
