John Altoon was a key figure in the Los Angeles art scene of the 1950s and 60s, at the center of the circle of progressive artists who showed at the Ferus Gallery. His abstractions are about the artist’s own presence, his gestures, as he paints with a messy abandon, free from the traditional idea of art as the imitation of reality. Now on view: John Altoon, Untitled, 1962, oil on canvas, Gift of Ruth and Murray Gribin.

TONIGHT: Join us (at home) for "Beyond the Visible - Hilma af Klint," a documentary about the visionary Swedish artist whose radically abstract paintings were relatively obscure until a record-breaking 2019 exhibition at the Guggenheim: tiny.cc/9s0wtz "Hilma af Klint was an abstract artist before the term existed, a visionary, trailblazing figure who, inspired by spiritualism, modern science, and the riches of the natural world around her, began in 1906 to reel out a series o...f huge, colorful, sensual, strange works without precedent in painting. The subject of a recent smash retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum, af Klint was for years an all-but-forgotten figure in art historical discourse, before her long-delayed rediscovery. Director Halina Dryschka’s dazzling, course correcting documentary describes not only the life and craft of af Klint, but also the process of her mischaracterization and erasure by both a patriarchal narrative of artistic progress and capitalistic determination of artistic value." Granville Redmond, the subject of a 2020 retrospective exhibition at LAM, has received an obituary in the New York Times about 85 years after his death. Redmond was famous as a landscape painter and a leader in California Impressionism, and his appearances in film were an early example of deaf representation in Hollywood. In this work by Leo Limón, a Maya woman makes offerings to the moon goddess Ixchel. Today is ideal for such an offering, as yesterday was a full moon and today is the second day of Hanal Pixán, a Maya tradition in the Yucatán that is very much like Día de Muertos in the rest of Mexico. Both are multi-day holidays which honor and celebrate loved ones who have died. Leo Limón, Dando Gracias, 1983, six-color serigraph, 34 x 22 inches paper, 28 x 18 1/4 inches image, Gift of Charlie Miller and Museum Purchase with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Happy Halloween! This image might look scary, but its title helps tell the story. That Old Black Magic is the title of a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The lyrics, scribbled on the chalkboard border surrounding the central image, refer to being in the spell of love, Aflame with such a burning desire that only your kiss can put out the fire.
