His tone got the name Brown Sound, as it was being compared to a light bulb during a brown out at low voltage. The Variac, less power tubes and an old Marshall head running around 90 VAC was the tone we so fondly identify with however, we know 90% of it actually came from his soul. It’s a regular thing for us to see project guitars come in to the shop. They all have some kind of meaning to the owner. Some have had them since child hood and others were bought as a parts guitar that they bring us to puzzle piece together. The owner of this particular Stratocaster did his own aged custom finish job that turned out just as he had hoped it would. Thanks for letting us help you with the project Jody!

This is a little video we put together on a 1952 Martin 00-18 Restoration we did. The guitar had been refinished at some point in a more red tinted finish that lacked pore filler. The last refinisher decided not to remove the bridge or the neck. You can see the finish on the bridge blistering from when we heated it up for removal. The finish will be stripped off the bridge and taken back down to the bare Brazilian Rosewood. The back and sides will be stripped and refinished in an Amber Brown, more appropriate for the age of this guitar. The neck will also be removed and refinished with the same schedule as the body. Finally the neck angle will be re-set resulting in a guitar that has a more comfortable feel.

Every guitar has a story and if you like Def Leopard you will like this post. The owner of this 1984 Ibanez Destroyer II DT555 is a huge Def Leopard Phil Collen fan. He wanted this guitar modified for a Kahler Tremolo which meant we had to plug the spring cavity and top tremolo rout. We had Jake strip the guitar down to bare bones. Because there were lots of dings in the finish, we decided to refinish it but we also had to plug some holes from the old trem. There is a lo...t of back and forth sanding and fitting involved when you are installing a wood plug like this. After several hours of work, we finally finished the project and the owner was very pleased to say the least. These guitars use to come with a Def Leopard vinyl record back in the 80’s. Take a close look at what Bob is holding in the photo with our crew and me holding the guitar all completed, it’s one of those original vinyls. Just a cool piece of history we wanted to share.
