Calling all art collectors! TheICA X SJPL’s Artist Mix first film is . Herb and Dorothy Vogel in their small one-bedroom apartment built one of the most important art collections of Minimalist and Conceptual art in America with humble means. Over five decades, Herb and Dorothy, one a postal worker and the other a librarian, became avid art collectors filling their home from their ceiling, floor, to every wall. I never thought that the artists we collected in... those days would become so famous. That wasn’t a goal for us. We bought [art] because we liked the work and when [the artists we bought] get recognition, we sort of share their joy. ~ Dorothy Vogel Are you an art collector? Tell us why YOU collect art below! This movie is available to borrow from the San José Public Library @sanjoselibrary. To learn more about ICA X SJPL Artist Mix and how to check-out these materials from SJPL, visit the link in our bio. Behind the Beauty: Uncovering the Imagery in Ebony G Patterson's Work There is a lot to see in the work of Ebony G Patterson. Patterson's maximalist work features imagery associated with beauty and wealth, including jewelery, glitter, beading, and tapestry. The layers of texture, the deeply saturated hues, and the astounding beauty of Patterson's work draws the viewer in and makes it difficult to look away. When looking further into her work, one notices Patterson has includ...ed imagery ofdiscarded shoes and clothing, fragmented body parts, and used children’s toysevoking loss of life and past violence. She explains, Because it’s so alluring, there’s so much muchness, it almost becomes a kind of fly-trap, where you get sucked in a little further, and then you have to contend with the violence. The ICA is pleased to be the first West Coast institution to host a major solo exhibition of Ebony G. Patterson's work next spring (March-September 2021). Stay tuned for more exciting news about this upcoming exhibition. [ABOVE] Ebony G. In March of 2020, while the ICA was preparing to open six new exhibitions, shelter-in-place orders went into effect. We weren't able to open our galleries and share these shows with you in person, however, you can still view these exhibitions from home. The work of @muzae, @kilns, @terrifriedman_studio, @meltedaway, @davidellingsenphoto, @ljjarts, and @thecultivator inspired, moved, and delighted us. We think it'll do the same for you. Visit the link in our bio to see images from our 2020 exhibitions.
