Lots of good info on this site for cleaning & preserving various materials. Though it is intended for items that have been submerged underwater, the processes described can also be applied to items found in other places. http://nautarch.tamu.edu/CRL/conservationmanual/index.htm

I just spoke to the grounds keeper at the National Archives about the fire hydrant shutoff valve we tried to locate for him. They finally found it .... 200 feet away. Even the "as built" plans showed it in the wrong location, but at the time it was built the inspector passed it. The pipes are made of plastic which is why we could not follow them. This all explains why we were unsuccessful in locating it within the standard code required 15 feet distance...it was not there ! He thanked us again for coming out and is keeping us in his file for any possible future needs he and his company may have.
