The Causes of Cardiac Arrest The thought of cardiac arrest is terrifying. One second, you are walking on the street and enjoying the sounds of nature with a loved one. Or perhaps you’re at a basketball game, cheering on your daughter. Or maybe you’re just leaving the gym after a great strength training session with your lifting partner.... Suddenly, very suddenly, everything stops. Cardiac arrest happens in an instant, with most people not realizing something is wrong until they begin to collapse. Very often cardiac arrest happens with absolutely no warning, and once it strikes, time is of the essence. Almost immediately upon going into cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating, the blood no longer flows to your heart, brain, and other vital organs, meaning no oxygen is getting to your body, and soon after your breathing stops and your pulse disappears. Cardiac Arrest is when the electrical activity in the heart stops functioning properly, often resulting in an abnormal and chaotic heart rhythm. While we might not have much warning for when cardiac arrest might strike, we do have an understanding of what causes it. Heart Disease Referred to by the medical community as Coronary Artery Disease, heart disease is the number one cause of cardiac arrest. Heart Disease is generally identified as plaque buildup in the arteries caused by genetics, poor diet, or lack of exercise. Heart Birth Defects While modern medicine is improving detection of heart birth defects daily, there are still many individuals with heart birth defects who go un-diagnosed. Your Age Men over the age of 45 and women over the age of 55 are at an increased risk of going into cardiac arrest. Your Family History A family history of any heart disease can dramatically increase your risk of cardiac arrest. Drug Use One report found that cocaine use can make an individual 24 times more likely to go into cardiac arrest, with other uppers also creating an increased risk. While we might not be able to pinpoint or predict when cardiac arrest will occur, it is important to understand the circumstances that factor into going into it. Knowing each risk and being aware of the potential warning signs can provide the extra time that could be crucial in surviving this terrifying condition. https://cprlomalinda.com/the-causes-of-cardiac-arrest/
Dude, you gave me a heart attack! Oh, man, that put me into cardiac arrest! As a society, we tend to joke a lot about heart failure. Scouring the sites like Instagram or Facebook, it is easy to find several memes making light of having a heart attack or videos on YouTube where bloggers refer to the latest fashions or celebrity hookups causing them to go into cardiac arrest. The reality, however, is that we’ve lost sight of the actual severity of heart attacks or cardiac a...Continue reading
