Since the start of the pandemic there has been a rise in violence toward the Asian-American community. Nearly 3,000 crimes have been reported, including right here in San Francisco. These victims are our family, friends, and neighbors. Horizons condemns hate and bigotry in all forms. The Horizons Familia has also dealt with violence against our community and we stand in unity with the AAPI community for a safer San Francisco. Standing in solidarity with our community partners, @cyc_sf @seadcsf and @jcycsf and so many other organizations serving the AAPI community. Please swipe to the next page to see other Asian American organizations you can send support to. #stopaapihate #solidarity #unity

2020 has brought the @HorizonsUnlimitedSF familia many opportunities to support our community we are so passionate about. We worked to ensure our youth and families were provided with needed technology and internet access to support distance learning and program engagement, as well as food, other needed supplies and resources to connect to vital services during a critical time. We've been outspoken in the face of continued racial injustice and inequity in the US and within ...our own Horizons familia, and continue to work hard to offer programs that empower, nurture, and transform the lives of Latino, African American and other youth of color, ages 12 to 24 and their families. During #GivingTuesday please honor the hard work of our employees, clients and community members by donating to our non-profit. Click on the link below to donate! https://www.horizons-sf.org/donate/

Gracias @lacajitasd for allowing us to bring a little joy to our Horizons team. Horizons normally spends the holiday season, sharing meals, doing fun activities, and playing little fun games. This year we aren’t able to do that due to COVID-19 and keeping our staff safe. La Cajita made it possible for us to enjoy a little time with one another even if it was through Zoom. Follow them and continue to support Black and Brown businesses.

Meet Alondra: . . . My name is Alondra Alcantara, I am 15 years old from the Mission. My poem talks about some of the stereotypical things people have thought about me and labeled me as. I also ask the questions on why we judge so quickly and rely on labels so much.... #justbecause #femalesagainstviolence #youthpower

Meet Jackie: . . My name is Jackie. I’m 17 years old and I’ve lived in the Mission District my whole life. I got the inspiration to write my poem from stereotypes I’ve heard people say, to others and myself. As a latina, you hear people call us criminals and illegal aliens. Our own people say this sometimes, and even though It’s a joke it’s not funny. This is a real issue and our people face real discrimination. As a woman, you hear men call us bossy, bitchy, moody. All of th...ose words with negative connotations. As someone with dyed hair/piercings, you hear people call you emo. Unstable. You get weird looks. I have/am all of those, but they shouldn’t define me in a negative way. I’m proud of who I am. #femalesagainstviolence #justbecause #youthpower

Meet Precious: . . My name is Precious Serratos. I’m 17 years old, and I live in the Mission District. I wrote about my gender, my ethnicity, and a component of my personality. I wanted to write about these things because they are part of who I am. My poem is composed of parts of who I am and stereotypes that belong with those identities. I wrote about being a girl and being able to do things that boys can do. I wrote about things the Latinx community is usually judged on. And lastly, I wrote about being a reserved person. I said that despite being a shy person I still have opinions and a voice. This activity made me realize that there are a lot of assumptions people have based on my identities and it also made me realize that I am more than what people may think of me. #justbecause #femalesagainstviolence #poetry #youthpower

Meet Jasmine: . . My name is Jasmine. I'm a 17 years old senior in High School. I live in San Francisco,CA but more specifically the Bayview district . I'm a part of Females Against Violence at Horizons Unlimited. I chose to write my poem about the stereotypes females go through. Writing this poem made me feel empowered and heard. It's important for people to know the pressures females go through and how we can all relate. Females are all powerful and we are all capable to do anything society puts us down for.

Meet Lindsey: . . My name is Lindsey, I'm 15 years old and I live in the excelsior. I included being young and being a girl in my poem because I think those are two reasons I get overlooked/judged. Many people have their own stereotypes about what young people and what girls are like and I wanted to show that my ideas matter and I don't have to fit into anyone's ideas of what I should be and I can be who I want.

What kids vape now Just as parents and teachers could tell the difference between Juul and a flash drive, a new crop of flavored vapes hit the shelves, and these might be even easier to hide. Why? Because they're disposable. That’s right, the tobacco industry has replaced their $40 iPhone of e-cigs, with a $10 vape kids can toss in the trash. (Sorry landfill.) Like Juul, many of these disposable vapes use nicotine salts, high-potency nicotine designed to absorb more quickly. Which should worry you. Because nicotine, in addition to addicting kids, can increase their anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and learning difficulties. Trending brands of disposable vapes to watch for: Puff Bar, Posh, Stig, Mojo, and Twst. Some of their kid-friendly flavors: Blue Raz, Frosted Apple, Mango, Lemon Dessert, Cherry Bomb.
