SUMMER PROGRAMS W/ MS MILLER There is still room if your child would like to sign up for Summer Enrichment Programs facilitated by 6th grade IHP History/English Teacher Ms. Miller-- for current IHP students and graduated IHP 8th graders. The sessions are not classes but more like clubs in which students interface with students. They run on Tuesdays and Thursdays in rotations. Students do not have to attend all of the sessions, but they should commit to a given module, and the...y may attend as many modules as interest them. There are four modules: 1) Social Activism - in this module, students identify, research, and develop a response for a real-world problem they are interested in. It involves action research, coming up with a response (based on the need and limitations they identify), planning, and follow-through. 2) Literature/Video Circles - In this module, students form book and/or video groups. They self-select material to analyze and then select jobs around which to develop questions. They will then have a weekly discussion. 3) Speech and Debate - This module is to develop and practice speech and debate skills. The focus is on limited preparation events (i.e. impromptu, SpAr, Consensus Debate) and on developing speaking skills and social awareness. The module may also include some acting/improvisation exercises. It is more designed to be on public speaking than specifically to prepare students for speech and debate competitions. 4) Interest Groups - This module is designed to give students with common interests a place to meet, discuss, and possibly share resources, challenges, etc. on their interests. Interested students should fill out the form HERE AND email Ms. Miller ([email protected]) that you submitted the form.

Check out the LAVA Magazine's Inaugural Issue below. Thanks to all who shared their work. https://www.dropbox.com/s/7z228l0mflp/LAVA-%20Equality.pdf From the LAVA Team:... The LAVA (Literary and Visual Arts) magazine is a literary magazine that focuses on social justice issues. Art and creativity are two powerful forces that are common catalysts for change. LAVA is an outlet for the students at Walter Reed Middle School to share their takes on various social justice issues through the literary and visual arts. Each issue invites students to submit entries on a chosen social justice theme. The 2020 LAVA literary magazine’s theme is EQUALITY. Not only was it an important theme when we first decided on it, but it has proven to be ever more important as the months have passed. We live in a world of unrest, a reflection of the intractable injustices that touch us all, whether we realize it or not. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we share our voices. When we share our experiences with others, we give them a broader understanding of the world. We are the generation that is best positioned to make long-term changes. We need to understand what’s wrong in our world and how to make it right. But knowing and understanding is not enough. We need to put ourselves out there and make a change. On behalf of the LAVA Team, we hope you’ll enjoy the EQUALITY edition of the LAVA Magazine and perhaps walk away seeing the world in a slightly new light. https://www.dropbox.com/s/7z228l0mflp/LAVA-%20Equality.pdf

Forms of Equality can include racial equality, gender equality, equality based on religious beliefs, and many more. Please submit questions and your stories, poems, comics, art and more via email to: [email protected] along with your name, grade level, and homeroom. Friends, we hope this finds you and your families healthy and well. It is with very heavy hearts that we share the tragic news that our former principal's (Ms. Gamba's) husband passed away today from COVID-19. For those who would like to support this wonderful member of our community and her two daughters in their time of need, a GoFundMe account has been set up and is linked below. Hello friends! So far we’ve raised an amazing $51,110! Our goal is still $74,000. This is the amount we need to fund all planned activities for this school year. 39% of families have donated, and we’re hoping for 100% participation! Suggested donation is $700, but any amount is welcome and appreciated! Recurring payments can be set up on Paypal! https://www.paypal.com/donate/ Our goal has been to wrap up annual giving by 12/3, but we don’t want to close it out without everyone donating. Click through to donate now! Tell your friends and family as well! This is such a unique program, and a great way for grandparents to make a tax deductible donation!
