While we have paused filming in the Redwood Region, it doesn't mean we aren't working and training behind the scenes. Our Film Commissioner just completed her international training through AFCI's Certified Film Commissioner Program. Congratulations, Cassandra Roberts Hesseltine! @filmcommissions #International #FilmCommissioner #Certified #AFCI #RedwoodRegion #Redwoods #NorthCoast #California #NorCal #Congratulations

The Film Commission would like to congratulate Humboldt-native Braeden Hall on her multiple festival wins for her short film "The Thought of Death." Watch the film here- https://vimeo.com/481596888 Studying at the Los Angeles Film School, Braeden Hall, 20, is a young aspiring filmmaker who focuses on arthouse/psychological thrillers and other etherial film genres. Braeden was raised in Humboldt County, California. After high school, she was accepted to San Francisco Art Insti...tute where she studied traditional and classic film techniques and learned most variants of film mediums, including the use of 16mm film, shot on a handheld Bolex camera. After the unfortunate closure of SFAI, Braeden moved to Los Angeles where she currently attends the Los Angeles Film School, studying digital film making. Here she hopes to build connections within the film industry to further lead her to work on larger projects and travel the rest of the world. See more

This past week the Film Commission attended the virtual version of FOCUS, a film trade show that is usually held in London. Having attended the show a couple of years ago in person, we knew we wanted to connect with the European and international film community again to encourage filming in the Redwood Region. Film Commissioner Cassandra Roberts Hesseltine held 20 zoom meetings with producers and other film professionals from New Zealand, England, Scotland, Argentina, New Yo...rk, Brazil, Columbia, Germany... just to name a few. Several had immediate projects they were interested in bringing to us, while others were interested for future projects. Everyone was excited to talk about filming in our redwoods, our Victorian architecture, and loved hearing about past projects, with the favorite being one of our favorites, too, Swiss Army Man! We're looking forward to next year and the possibilities opened up by connecting with all of the international filmmakers.

Today the Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission is celebrating an important day; it is the 10 year anniversary of Cassandra Roberts Hesseltine becoming our Film Commissioner. We've put a video together to highlight so much that has happened in the past decade: Feature films, red carpet events and screenings, Movies in the Park, our Meet the Expert interview series... Here's some facts about the past ten years that paint a picture of our success-... 77 scouts of the region resulting in dollars spent in the community 222 completed film productions $11,105,631 in direct spending which translates to $32,761,611 in economic effect (after multiplier)! While the office is a 2 person show, we couldn't have done it without our wonderful Board of Directors, community partners, advisors, and our ever-important volunteers/interns.

Celebrating success as we go on hiatus... Humboldt County has seen over $2.3 million in direct spending, with the bulk from the feature The Sky is Everywhere aka Clarinet. During the seven-week filming, the production spent: Local Lodging Costs: ~$750k (including airbnbs and hotels)... Local Food Spend: ~$23k (not including catering costs because vendor was from out of state) Local Vendor Spend: ~$425k Local Crew Labor: ~$190k Local Background Labor: ~$120k (527 locals hired) Total Location Fees Spend: ~$230k (including $22,620 with NHUHSD, and $5,500 with the Eureka City School District) Del Norte County has received $23,000 in direct dollars. According to the California Film Commission, the economic impact multiplier is $2.95 for every direct dollar spent. This takes into account other expenses, as well as, the money circulating around the county (approximately three times before leaving the area). This makes the total economic benefit for Humboldt at nearly $6.8 million, while Del Norte’s is $67,850, indirectly.

Yesterday marked the last day of filming of "The Sky is Everywhere" as the production wrapped after shooting their final scenes in Old Town Eureka! We'd like to congratulate the cast and crew on completing filming, as well as, thank them for helping keep our community safe by their strict compliance to Covid-19 protocols during their time here. We'd also like to thank all of the local cast, crew, and vendors for assisting this production with all their hard work! Of course, i...t couldn't happen without the public and private locations, neighboring businesses & homes, and city & county permitting agencies, too! Thank you! A huge thanks goes to A24 for bringing this production to Humboldt County. A special thanks goes out to all of Humboldt for hosting this production during the pandemic. With each shoot, we're helping to rebuild our economy and keep our stellar film-friendly reputation!

Two years ago the Bird Box trailer dropped. We were very proud to have been featured as prime filming locations for Netflix's biggest movie. Little did we expect to be inundated with memes. For our Red Carpet Gala in 2019 we put together this little video of some of the best ones. We figured with the anniversary coming up we'd share it. Enjoy! (and if you still haven't seen Bird Box, go watch it!)
