Assalamailakum.. today I just wanted to touch on the topic of *Mental Health* While we talk a lot about physical health , *Mental Health* is also an equally important aspect of our health. While many people ignore it or brush it under the carpet this is an important topic and bringing more awareness about it is important. While I’m not an expert on mental health here are some points that can help: 1. Increasing one’s Imaan and connection with Allah.... It’s been scientifically proven (there are many studies and books written on this topic ) to show that healing (mentally and physically) is greater in people who have belief in God and pray regularly but as a medical practitioner they are not allowed to recommend prayer as a treatment. So while some people might dismiss that all causes of depression are due to not having a connection with Allah there are also people who don’t value it’s importance so it’s important to connect with your scholars, read the tafseer of the Quran and go into deeper understanding that increases the connection with Allah that will also give peace to the soul. 2. Treatment: While working on the first point it’s also important to go to the right doctor. When we have a physical illness we don’t rely only on dua and it is also encouraged in Islam to seek treatment by our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAWS: Abu Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Verily, Allah sent down the disease and the cure, and for every disease he made a cure. Seek treatment, but do not seek treatment by the unlawful. Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 3874 Hence it’s important to go to therapists / counselors when required and not associate any stigma to it and seek the right treatment. 3. Nutrition in mental health: There have been numerous studies that show that many nutrition deficiencies of essential amino acids and Vitamins which are needed in the production of hormones can cause symptoms of anxiety and depression and these are being treated with mega doses of vitamins and amino acids under medical supervision. . . Iftaar! As a dietitian I’m often asked what do you eat for iftaar. Well Ramadan to me is a month for fasting and getting close to Allah. Eid is for feasting! . . While I love to have some traditional and cultural foods too(samosaaasss!!) you just have to be clever about them.. in simple words- don’t have them daily! ... . . For iftaar we have, Nabeez, dates, fruits and just one item daily followed by dinner an or so hour later. Today we had chana chaat : my favorite! Loaded with kabuli chana, cucumbers , onions tomatoes and pomegranate and lemon juice! . . Great quality protein with veggies and delicious.. perfect Allhumdullilah . . #ramadan #ramadan2020 #iftaar #iftaari #iftarrecipes #iftarideas #iftar #healthylifestyle #healthyfood #health #healthifyme #nutrition #dietitiansofinstagram See more
