Lupe was a social worker organizing support groups for torture victims and refugees whose lives had been shattered by the wars in Central America. Practically everyone I knew through her work had lost someone they loved. Some had found the maimed corpses of friends or family members left in trash dumps or along road sides. for ’ , 1975-76 High afternoon, late summer, heat grows from the ground... where sunlight hits through the trees, a million camera obscuras shuttering in the drift. Already not the same landscape as yesterday, nor last week, maybe from afar, the way you recognize your brother by his shape and gait as he walks up the drive, but close, you see the wrinkles and splinters of seasons passing, weathered as a ladder left in the orchard, paint peeling, hinges tweaked. Same, hasn’t changed a bit. But for the details, fine. Fine, we’ll carry it with us, up until the details blur, and we forget what it looked like in the spring. Last year for the exhibition : , di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art collaborated with poet Jeremy Benson. As Poet-in-Residence for Viola Frey: Center Stage, Benson crafted twelve original short poems inspired by works in the exhibition. Visitors were invited to take-a-poem and leave-a-poem in exchange. Robert Arneson, the father of Funk Art, an anti-establishment movement that reacted against the nonobjectivity of abstract expressionism. Using found objects, autobiographical subjects and lots of humor Arneson created bizarre sculptures that challenged the absurdity of everyday objects. Make a balancing sculpture by placing random objects available in your home on top of one another. Will they collapse or will they hold each other up? If your sculpture collapses, try using different objects or changing the base of your sculpture to find balance. Make your sculpture a self portrait by using objects that describe your personality or your interest. Things to consider: How can you insert humor into your sculpture? Can objects be humorous? If not, how can you manipulate them to be comical? Is balance important in your sculpture? If it is, how did you find balance and how can you make sure your sculpture won’t collapse? Viola Frey was born in Lodi, California in 1933, and was an artist and teacher in the Bay Area before she passed away in Oakland in 2004. She is perhaps most widely known for her larger than life, colorful ceramic sculptures.
