"I haven’t had much experience outside of Colburn, but I can’t imagine it being any better than it is. It’s been very prestigious, and I’ve been able to really get challenged in ways that I wasn’t in other places... I’ve been able to grow and excel in dance and just learn so quickly and have these teachers that are just so excited for me to keep learning and to keep challenging myself." Tap dance would not be where it is today without this tap legend! John W. Bubbles, born John William Sublett in 1902, was an American tap dancer, actor, and vaudevillian instrumental to the progression of tap dance on a global scale. He was the first tapper to use his entire foot, not just the toe. In doing so, he was able to create more complex, syncopated rhythms with a relaxed upper body. Ever the innovator, he blended improvisational jazz music with his unique tap styles,... creating a new genre of tap known as rhythm tap. Bubbles performed in the famous duo Buck and Bubbles for over 4 decades, and in 1931 they became the first Black artists to perform at Radio City Music Hall. In 1936, they were the first Black artists to appear on television. In 1980, Bubbles received the Life Achievement Award from the American Guild of Variety Artists. Bubbles passed away in 1986, and was later inducted into the Tap Hall of Fame in 2002.

Colburn continues its celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a series of lunchtime concerts highlighting the composer’s beloved Sonatas for Violin and Piano. Join us at the table each Thursday at noon to hear a complete sonata performed by Colburn faculty members Martin Beaver, violin, and Fabio Bidini, piano.
