Registration for our signature Black Teacher Leadership and Sustainability Institute (BTLSI) is now live! Black teachers and educators who attend this professional development offering will deepen commitment and agency in their work while developing strategies for leadership and sustainability. Participants will virtually receive caring guidance and facilitation to collaboratively explore the personal and professional challenges they face as Black school-based educators.... This experience is an opportunity to share, reflect, and set intentions for how to lead and thrive in different contexts and build community with Black teachers and educators from across the country We encourage prospective attendees to reach out to principals/administration to request use of professional development funds to pay the registration fee; we do not expect Black teachers to personally pay for this offering If you are not able to secure funds, WE HAVE 20 FULL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE! Huge shoutout to those who supported our #investinblackteachers fundraiser that helped make these scholarships possible Learn more and register at bit.ly/btlsi21!

In honor of Women's History Month, we have special guest, Ericka Huggins, joining us for session 5 of our Liberation Laboratory Series Facilitated by BTP Teacher Leader, Nakachi Clark-Kasimu, this event will highlight lessons of the Black Panthers' Oakland Community Schools and provide space for Black teachers and educators to brainstorm together and receive support about ways to apply these lessons to today's context We hope you can join us for this Black educator ...racial-affinity event! Register at bit.ly/btp-ocs5 Read more about our guest, @ericka_huggins below From 19731981, Ericka Huggins was the Director of the Oakland Community School, the groundbreaking community-run child development center and elementary school founded by the Black Panther Party. Working with a team of incredibly talented party members and local educators, a vision for the innovative curriculum for the school was written. This curriculum and the principles that inspired it became a model for and predecessor to the charter school movement. During that time, with community support, Ericka became both the first woman and the first Black person to be appointed to the Alameda County Board of Education. Ericka is an educator, Black Panther Party member, former political prisoner, human rights advocate and poet. For 45 years she has lectured in the United States, and internationally, on Restorative Practices and, the role of spiritual practice in creating social change. Currently Ericka works with WORLD TRUST Educational Services facilitating conversations focused on Race and Gender Equity. In addition, she facilitates workshops on Radical Self Care for Women of Color.

#Repost @herhymeswithme thank you for this beautiful piece of truth! Look up the history of standardized/high stakes testing. Look up who constructed it and why. Look at how it has been used throughout history, who it benefits, and who it disenfranchises. Even before the #pandemic it was problematic, but NOW?? Come on, y’all. #teachersofinstagram #teacher #teachers #teachersfollowteachers #test #testing #blackteachersmatter #blackteachers #blackteachersrock #liberatedlearning #liberate #blackteachermagic #teachertruth #teachertribe #blackeducators #teachersofig #teachersofinsta #blackteacherloop #abolitionistteaching

Our 4th Liberation Laboratory is happening THIS FRIDAY from 4-5:30 PT; 6-7:30 CT; 7-8:30 ET! In this session with guest speaker, the legendary Dr. Tolbert Small, participants will gain insight about key things educators should know about health and wellness when it comes to fostering liberated learning experiences with their students Read more about Dr. Small below Dr. Small worked as the leading physician for the Oakland based Black Panther Party, setting up their natio...nal sickle cell anemia foundation and the George Jackson free clinic. He is also the first African American physician to practice acupuncture in the United States. Pro Bono, he cared for all the rank and file party members, including all of the leadership. Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, Elaine Brown, George Jackson, and David Hilliard were all his close friends, comrades, and patients. He was known as the people’s doctor and he is now also known as the doctor’s doctor. In 1972, Dr. Small became one of first physicians to visit the People’s Republic of China. Inspired by the barefoot doctors, he came home to teach himself acupuncture and incorporated it into his general practice. He and his wife, Anola Small, co-founded the Harriet Tubman Medical Office, where he began a healing practice in 1980 using a mixture of Western and Chinese medicine. Their service to the people has uplifted the lives of thousands of members of the community in the Bay Area and nationwide. His advice to the people? Develop a social consciousness and you will be energized by the positive things that you do in society" This event will be facilitated by our very own BTP Fellow, Coron Brinson!
