EZTV, a focal point of the independent video revolution, has been an organization in residence at 18th Street Arts Center since 2000. Since 1993, EZTV has been directed by media artists, Michael J. Masucci and Kate Johnson. Since its founding in 1979 by John Dorr, the community-based and artist-run organization has fostered creative experimentation between the arts and the sciences, recognizing that neither would exist in its fullest form, without the other. For artists at EZ...TV, continuous technological change is a given, and is welcomed for the continuing challenges as well as possibilities that new horizons present to creatives. EZTV artists and collaborators will gather and share community once more at : , an online experience of performances, memories and interaction that celebrate Johnson’s achievements in her 50 years on the one-year anniversary of her passing. Participating artists include Barbara T. Smith, S. Pearl Sharp, Mike Garson Kate Crash, Danielle Winkler, Joel Virgel, Michael J. TODAY at 6 PM! Join artists Dina Abdulkarim and Hugo Hopping for a thoughtful conversation moderated by artist Harry Gamboa Jr. and introduced by the Armory Center for the Arts Chief Curator Irene Georgia Tsatsos. The inspiration for this talk came from some of the key themes of the 2019 exhibition by The Winter Office at the Armory, including the production of non-perfect models of adaptation to ever-shifting, always contested environmental conditions. Using the exhibition... as a point of departure, this dynamic conversation looks at the evolving Los Angeles urban landscape against the dissolution of public space, the exclusive architecture of privacy, and housing inequities. The Winter Office were also artists in residence at 18th Street Arts Center in 2019. For more information: https://www.armoryarts.org//2021/abdulkarim-hopping-gamboa/

Building Networks of Empathy is now on view at our Airport Campus! The exhibition is the second of a two-part show that asks us to consider the ways in which art empowers not only the artist, but its viewers to transform their most difficult experiences into enlightened outcomes. The first part of the show is an ongoing online-only exhibition entitled Facing Darkness, which encouraged artists in our community to reflect internally on our current moment of pandemic, isolat...ion, and structural inequity laid bare. A live Zoom panel featuring Alma Ruiz and Karen Sherman, moderated by Paul Bonin-Rodriguez, will kickoff the exhibition! This will take place Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 12 pm PST. #FacingDarkness: During this time of isolation and social distancing, my hectic schedule came to a screeching halt. It was a strange revelation when I found myself with almost too much time on my hands and a lot of time with my thoughts. As life paused and routines reorganized, I’d been gifted a unique opportunity to turn inward and to reflect on what this moment in history can teach me. This journey has not been easy as I faced my fears and met the darker sides of myself th...at can show up under stress and loss. I’m committed to walking this unfamiliar path and seeking the lessons this moment presents. Artwork and words by artist in residence Rebecca Youssef Facing Darkness is an online exhibition of 25 varied artists from 18th Street’s artist community that present artworks that address the human capacity to overcome hardships on both global and personal scales. #FacingDarkness: My first response to being at home social distancing was to do Art. Shapes and patterns started to show up in my mind's eye and I began to cut out circles. The circles became a pattern and before long I had created a pattern of circles that are connected. Facing Darkness opens us to possibilities. We are all connected, we are all different colors and shapes and we are all beautiful. #FacingDarkness: To me, such profound times like the ones we are going through now, are always an invitation and an opportunity to go within, approaching it as something happening for me instead of happening to me. My work through art reflects how I relate to myself while going through different circumstances. It’s a conversation within my inner states, different levels of consciousness and my body through automatic painting, allowing those parts inside to speak through gest...ures, facing different aspects of myself, my shadows and perceptions of the inner and outer realities. In this manner, my work reveals information personally and collectively, beyond what I can see or express through words. (Inter)Facing Darkness is a facilitated dialogue that will take place next Thursday, November 12 at 5 PM PST! Let’s meet virtually and reflect on Facing Darkness, an online exhibition now on view, and consider how the show renders a public crisis and artists’ circumstances evident and knowable. Moderated by artist-scholar Paul Bonin-Rodriguez, with talks by curator Alma Ruiz and dancemaker Karen Sherman, (Inter)facing Darkness will frame a dialogue on how artists are op...erating as second responders, as thought leaders, and resource gatherers at this time. #FacingDarkness: The artworks depict the nexus between ourselves and the world around and within us, chaotic strands of our entangled mental, our interconnectedness, algorithm patterns, binary codes, networks all happening in a creative field of infinite potential. We are in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic; we are also at the peak of the country’s 400 year old pandemic of racism and police brutality. At no other time in our lives, have we had the opportunity to see what ...would happen if the world simply stopped. The Great Pause. It has forced us to hold up the mirror to ourselves as human beings to see who we really are. Hyperallergic recommends you see Beatriz Cortez and Kang Seung Lee’s exhibition Becoming Atmosphere, now on view at our Airport Gallery by appointment only. Hyperallergic writes: The significance of breathing both as the basis of life, but also as a pathway for disease has been magnified since the appearance of coronavirus earlier this year. With their two person-exhibition Becoming Atmosphere, Beatriz Cortez and Kang Seung Lee consider breath, air, and atmosphere with... a wide lens as they pertain to ecological, cultural, and political concerns. The show features an array of work, including Lee’s drawings of vaporous figures in front of the Hollywood sign and Twin Towers (after Tseng Kwong Chi’s iconic photos), and Cortez’s Tinguely-like sculpture of piston-driven plants.
